Lightning strikes Jerusalem in the pre-dawn darkness, as the city waits in expectation of a new day. To me, the imagery of this shot is deepened by Jerusalem s turbulent history. How often have these walls borne the brunt of forces larger than themselves! But there is something else too. We read in the Gospels that when Jesus was crucified outside Jerusalem, darkness came over the whole land. Breathing his last, Jesus proclaimed: "It is finished!" and the very earth quaked. His death brought eternal salvation for all who would believe. It was like light striking the earth from the heavens - the offer of a new hope for the world.
